North London Ambulance Arson Attack Investigated as Potential Terrorist Incident
Arson Attack Destroys Jewish Charity's Ambulances
In the early hours of Monday morning, four ambulances belonging to Hatzola Northwest, a Jewish volunteer emergency service, were set ablaze outside a synagogue in Golders Green, North London. CCTV footage showed three masked individuals approaching the ambulances, which subsequently exploded due to gas canisters inside. Although no one was injured, the incident has deeply shaken the local community.
Counter-Terrorism Police Investigate, PM Condemns Attack
The Metropolitan Police are treating the incident as a hate crime and are now investigating it as a possible terrorist incident. An online group linked to Iran has claimed responsibility for the attack, but police currently have no further evidence linking them to the incident. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the antisemitic attack and pledged government support to replace the destroyed ambulances.
Heightened Fear in the Jewish Community
The attack comes amidst a significant rise in antisemitism faced by Jewish communities across the UK since the October 7th Hamas attacks. A local resident, Benjamin Benhamu, expressed his shock, stating that what he used to read in the news is now happening on his doorstep. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis described the incident as a "hideous, evil attack" on a facility dedicated to saving lives, both Jewish and non-Jewish, and called for the highest level of seriousness in its investigation.
