Democratic Party's Jeonnam Gwangju Mayoral Primary: 'Fake Vote Count' Spreads, Causing Controversy
Announcement of Primary Candidates and Party Rules
The Democratic Party of Korea recently confirmed the five candidates who will advance to the main primary for the Jeonnam Gwangju Unified Special Mayor. The decision was made through a vote by party members among six preliminary candidates. However, in accordance with party regulations, individual candidate vote counts and rankings were not disclosed, with only their names being announced. Candidates also signed non-disclosure agreements, allowing them to confirm only their own vote percentages. This adheres to the Democratic Party's nomination rules.
Spread of 'Fake Vote Counts' and Candidates' Reactions
Despite the regulations, immediately after the primary results were announced, various 'fake vote count' messages rapidly spread online, leading to significant controversy. In response, candidate Min Hyung-bae demanded a police investigation and the release of official vote counts from the central party, also vowing to file complaints against those spreading false information. Min stated, "This opaque primary process is becoming a breeding ground for the spread of false information." Candidate Joo Cheol-hyun also emphasized that the dissemination of false information is an enemy of fair elections and called for accountability from those involved. Candidate Shin Jung-hoon stressed that only accurate information should be shared for a fair primary and urged the central party to take clear action. In contrast, candidate Kang Ki-jung maintained that it is a matter for the Democratic Party's Central Election Management Committee to decide, while candidate Kim Young-rok's side suggested that the messages were likely created by individuals interested in the election and expressed no desire to overreact.
Central Party's Stance
The Democratic Party of Korea officially stated that the circulated vote count messages lack credibility. The party's Election Management Committee announced that even if no candidate secures a majority in the unified mayoral primary, the vote counts will not be disclosed to the candidates themselves. The party continues to be vigilant against the spread of false information, recognizing the potential for such information to distort public opinion during the election process, thus demanding a thorough response.
