Bills for Public Prosecution and Central Investigation Agency Pass Standing Committees

The National Assembly activated its standing committees in quick succession to process the bills for establishing a Public Prosecution Agency and a Central Investigation Agency ahead of today's plenary session. During the Public Administration and Security Committee meeting, opposition party members raised concerns that the establishment of the Central Investigation Agency would lead to investigations tailored to the ruling power's preferences. People Power Party lawmaker Goh Dong-jin criticized that the excessive command and supervision powers granted to the Minister of Public Administration and Security would reduce national investigative capabilities to a mere subordinate tool of the regime. However, the Democratic Party of Korea pushed forward with the bills, stating that judicial reform is a public demand and a situation brought upon by the prosecution itself.

Ruling Party Accelerates Bill Processing After Agreement

Following this, during the Legislation and Judiciary Committee meeting, despite heated debates, the bills for the Public Prosecution Agency and Central Investigation Agency were ultimately passed with the leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea. People Power Party lawmaker Na Kyung-won pointed out that this would practically lead to 'people's prosecution' and 'people's investigation,' rather than civilian control. In contrast, Minister of Public Administration and Security Yoon Ho-jung countered that while the Prosecutor's Office might disappear, the prosecutor's role as a guardian of citizens' human rights would be revived. The processing of the judicial reform bills, which had been delayed for over two months since the government's announcement in January, rapidly advanced after the Democratic Party of Korea's agreement with the government, passing both the standing committee and the Legislation and Judiciary Committee in just one day. The Democratic Party of Korea plans to process these two bills in today's plenary session, but with the People Power Party preparing for a filibuster, the legislative process is expected to be completed only on the 21st.
