Ministry of Foreign Affairs: 'Careful Consideration of Hormuz Strait TF Participation Request with National Interest First'
Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Stance on 'Hormuz Strait TF' Participation Request
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is difficult to disclose specific diplomatic communications regarding the request from the United States to participate in a Maritime Task Force (TF) for safe navigation in the Hormuz Strait. However, the government emphasized that it would carefully review the matter with national interests as its top priority. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that South Korea and the U.S. are in close communication regarding the Middle East situation and will seek a response that aligns with the constitution and international norms, considering various factors and evolving circumstances.
Clarification on Foreign Minister's Remarks and Future Plans
The issue arose from focused questions during a telephone conversation between Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio yesterday, concerning whether an official request for TF participation was made. In response to criticisms that the minister's answers in the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee were ambiguous, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson emphasized that the Middle East situation is an ongoing process with continuous changes. He explained that the government needs to exercise extreme caution in reviewing this matter, stating that communication with relevant authorities is maintained, prioritizing the safety of Korean ships and crew. He also mentioned that additional measures would be taken if necessary.
