China Accelerates Robot Training Data Collection in Homes and Factories
China's Robotics Industry Boosts Real-World Data Collection
Chinese robotics companies are accelerating robot development by acquiring low-cost training data in home and factory environments. This approach aims to overcome the global robotics industry's challenge of insufficient training data that combines complex visual and movement information. In a Beijing apartment, a humanoid robot developed by X Square Robot spent an hour folding clothes and arranging shoes, collecting valuable household activity data. The robot focused on gathering data in real-world settings, accompanied by a human housekeeper.
Low Labor Costs and Government Support Enhance Data Competitiveness
While U.S. companies often outsource data collection to developing countries due to high labor costs, Chinese firms benefit from relatively lower labor costs, government support, and strong public enthusiasm for robotics development, allowing them to collect massive datasets locally. E-commerce giant JD.com, for example, is collaborating with the local government in Suqian to generate 10 million hours of robotics training data over the next two years. This localized, low-cost data collection is expected to provide a significant competitive advantage, helping Chinese robots better adapt to domestic environments.
