Russia-Ukraine Confrontation Continues, NATO Eastern Flank Strengthens Defenses
Russian Strikes on Ukrainian Cities and Damages
Russia launched drone attacks on Odesa, a southern Ukrainian city, damaging commercial buildings and homes, and causing multiple injuries. Fires erupted and debris was scattered as firefighters worked to extinguish the blazes. Further attacks were reported in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, causing damage to these cities. Russia has consistently targeted Ukrainian cities since the war began and recently claimed to have captured two more locations.
Ukraine's Counterattacks and International Reactions
Ukraine has responded by using Storm Shadow missiles and numerous drones to attack key Russian port cities, including Sevastopol, where an apartment block and the central bank were damaged. Pope Leo XIV expressed solidarity with those suffering from recent attacks targeting civilians, stating that war does not solve problems but aggravates them, multiplying suffering and hatred. Meanwhile, at the Drone Summit 2026 in Riga, NATO's eastern flank nations, including Latvia, discussed strengthening their defenses. Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics stated that Ukraine is regaining the initiative and Russia is clearly failing. Poland and the UK also signed a new defense treaty to counter threats, including those from Russia.
