Bear Sightings and Search in Industrial Park

Bear sightings have been repeatedly reported in an industrial park in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture. Yesterday (May 20, 2026) afternoon, a passerby spotted one bear entering the industrial park premises and reported it to the police. Footage captured the bear roaming freely within the park.

Continued Bear Sightings and City Response

Approximately 30 minutes after the initial report, Sakata City officials also sighted two bears at a factory adjacent to the first sighting location. In total, at least five bear sighting reports were received that day. Fortunately, no injuries to people or damage to buildings have been confirmed so far.

Drones Used for Bear Search

Sakata City believes there is a high possibility that the bear has left the industrial park. In cooperation with the fire department, drones are being used to search for the bear's whereabouts. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution.
