CDC Inspects Cruise Ships, Some Achieve Perfect Scores
CDC Cruise Ship Sanitation Inspections
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducts regular sanitation inspections of cruise ships through its Vessel Sanitation Program while they are in United States ports. Ships are typically inspected twice a year, though longer periods outside the United States can change the schedule. Inspectors evaluate everything from galleys and swimming pools to pest management on board the vessels.
Top-Scoring Ships and Grading Criteria
A score of 86 or higher is considered satisfactory, and some ships have achieved a perfect 100 in the past year. Popular cruise lines with top-scoring ships include Royal Caribbean's 'Icon of the Seas', Disney Cruise Line's 'Disney Fantasy', and Virgin Voyages' 'Brilliant Lady'. These results are expected to boost passenger confidence in the hygiene and safety of cruise travel.
