WHO Revises MV Hondius Hantavirus Cases to 10
MV Hondius Hantavirus Outbreak Update
The World Health Organization (WHO) has revised the number of hantavirus cases linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship to 10, following a previously inconclusive US case testing negative. A total of three people have died in the outbreak. Officials maintain that the wider public risk remains low. The virus involved has been identified as the rare Andes strain, which can only spread between people in limited instances after close and prolonged contact.
Ship's Journey and Crew Quarantine
The WHO emphasized that this outbreak is not comparable to COVID-19 or a pandemic threat, underscoring its limited severity. The MV Hondius is currently en route to the Netherlands, specifically Vlissingen, where the remaining crew members are expected to quarantine. This measure is intended to prevent further spread of the virus and ensure the health and safety of the crew onboard.
