Tokyo's Shibuya Ward: Unique Eateries, from 'World's Best Oyster Fry' to 'Courage-Required Cafe'
Unique Dining Experiences in Shibuya Ward
Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, is home to a variety of distinctive restaurants that are attracting both locals and tourists. Notably, 'Wabu,' a 52-year-old Japanese restaurant, is renowned for its 'World's Best Oyster Fry Set,' a recipe passed down from the founder. This signature dish, a massive, fist-sized oyster fry containing four whole oysters, is prepared daily by the second-generation owner, Hidekazu Kawashima, who makes approximately 300 pieces. Over 90% of customers order this menu, marveling at its impressive size and rich flavor.
'Courage-Required Cafe' and the 'Signless Cafe'
Another intriguing spot, 'Little Dipper' near Yoyogi-Koen Station, has earned the nickname 'the cafe that requires courage' due to its eccentric exterior and enigmatic messages. This 38-year-old coffee shop displays cryptic messages like 'We make it for you' and 'Are you just peeking?' to pique customers' curiosity. Established by master Kobayashi, a former designer, who sought to foster communication, it offers a warm ambiance and serves carefully prepared dishes like Seafood Doria and homemade cookies.
Opened in 2021, 'Prumime' is a cafe that is difficult to find due to its lack of a signage, yet it has gained popularity for its modern and sophisticated interior. The cafe specializes in 'Gokuatsu Teppan Cheese Toast' and 'Shiro no Teppan Omelette Plate,' providing what they call a 'special breakfast' experience. Its minimalist design and refined offerings cater to customers seeking a quiet, unhurried start to their day.
