Shibuya Ward Imposes ¥2,000 Fine for Littering, 5 Cases Detected on First Day
Enforcement of Littering Fines Begins
Tokyo's Shibuya Ward initiated a new system on June 1st to collect a ¥2,000 fine for littering. This measure was introduced in response to a noticeable increase in littering around Shibuya Station following the COVID-19 pandemic. Ward patrol officers will conduct 24-hour surveillance to identify and penalize littering offenses.
Five Cases of Cigarette Littering Reported on First Day
On the first day of enforcement, June 1st, a total of five fines were issued by 2 PM. Among the documented cases, patrol officers observed individuals discarding cigarette butts on the street after smoking. Tetsuya Nakahata anticipates that littering will likely increase at night and emphasized the necessity for continuous monitoring and guidance.
Mandatory Trash Can Installation for Convenience Stores and Cafes
Furthermore, businesses such as convenience stores and cafes located within designated areas around Shibuya Station are now required to install trash cans. Failure to comply will result in a ¥50,000 fine. This initiative aims to reduce litter and promote cleaner public spaces.
