Deteriorating Humanitarian Situation in Lebanon

Elsa Softic, Deputy Chief of Operations at Première Urgence Internationale, reports a deepening humanitarian crisis in Lebanon due to the Israeli advance. Approximately one million Lebanese citizens have been displaced from their homes, constituting one-fifth of the country's population. Many have been displaced multiple times and returned to find their homes destroyed during supposed ceasefires.

Collapse of Health and Social Infrastructure

As Israeli forces push further into southern Lebanon, humanitarian space is shrinking, and access to basic services is severely restricted. The health infrastructure has been particularly hard hit, with over 50 primary healthcare centers and three hospitals forced to close. Softic highlights that this situation is similar to what has been observed in Gaza, where civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, is being targeted, despite international humanitarian law requiring their protection.

Buffer Zone and Multilayered Crisis

More than 150,000 people from a 4-10 km military buffer zone near the border are unable to return to their homes. Many are living in makeshift tents by roadsides or in collective shelters like schools and gymnasiums, which lack adequate facilities and hygiene. Lebanon was already grappling with a severe economic crisis, and the ongoing conflict has added multiple layers of hardship, profoundly impacting residents' lives and mental health. Première Urgence Internationale continues to provide aid under dangerous conditions, but calls for urgent international attention and funding to address the escalating crisis, emphasizing the need to not forget the plight of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank as well.
