Delhi Hotel Fire Tragedy: 21 Dead Amid Alleged Safety Violations
A devastating fire at a hotel in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, has claimed the lives of 21 people and left dozens injured. The blaze, which started around 8:30 AM, was reported to the fire department at 8:50 AM, with fire engines arriving 30-40 minutes later. Most victims died of suffocation, and 40 injured are hospitalized. The hotel, located near Max Hospital, was popular among foreign nationals visiting India for medical treatment due to its affordable rates. Among the deceased, 17 were foreign nationals from Nigeria, Liberia, Mozambique, and Bangladesh.
Illegal Construction and Single Exit Point Contributed to High Casualties
Investigations revealed that the hotel was licensed for a maximum of six rooms under the Delhi Government's 'Bed & Breakfast Scheme', but was allegedly operating 25 rooms illegally. The building also lacked windows and had only one entry and exit point, making evacuation extremely difficult during the fire. The hotel owner, Lokesh Bajaj, and his partners are currently on the run, with Delhi Police actively searching for them. Fire officials stated that the blaze, which originated in the basement, spread rapidly throughout the building, exacerbating the casualties. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has vowed a thorough investigation and assured action against those responsible.
