Trump's 'Weaponization' Compensation Fund Faces Opposition

Donald Trump's administration proposed a nearly $1.8 billion fund to compensate victims of alleged government 'weaponization'. This initiative originated from a $10 billion lawsuit settlement between Trump and the Justice Department regarding the alleged mishandling of his tax records by the IRS. The fund was intended to provide compensation to individuals who claimed to be victims of government abuse.

Congressional Republicans Halt the Fund

The proposed fund quickly triggered fierce opposition from Republicans in Congress, leading to its temporary halt. Sources familiar with the plan told Reuters that some Republican lawmakers expressed strong objections. Concerns were particularly raised that January 6 rioters could potentially benefit from the fund, intensifying the backlash against the proposal.

Judicial Intervention and Department of Justice Response

Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats also voiced strong opposition, citing a lack of transparency and accountability. On Friday, a federal judge in Virginia temporarily halted the Trump administration from establishing the fund until June 12, pending further legal arguments. The Justice Department stated it "disagrees strongly" with the ruling but will abide by the court's decision, while a White House source indicated that Trump is "not thrilled" but understands this is the only way forward for now.
