United Airlines Flight Diverted to Wisconsin After Unruly Passenger Attempts to Breach Cockpit
United Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Wisconsin
A United Airlines flight traveling from Chicago to Minneapolis was forced to make an emergency landing at Dane County Regional Airport in Wisconsin after an unruly 75-year-old passenger attempted to breach the cockpit. The FBI is investigating the incident, which is one of over 600 unruly passenger reports so far this year and the second mid-air security scare this week.
Mid-Air Incident Causes Stark Warning
Air traffic controllers issued a stark warning, indicating they might have to close the airfield due to a "potential hijack." Law enforcement officers onboard the plane managed to restrain the passenger, and no injuries were reported. Passenger Mike Rundle described the experience as "a little bit scary" due to the unknowns. This incident occurred just two days after another disruptive passenger forced an American Airlines flight from Athens to New York to divert to Rome.
Unruly Passenger Incidents Remain High
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), reported incidents have slowly declined since peaking at 720 in March 2021. However, the number of unruly passenger reports remains above pre-pandemic levels, with 141 incidents reported last month. Robert Sumwalt, former NTSB Chair, emphasized the need for airlines to maintain and adhere to a no-fly list to prevent individuals who have caused problems on previous flights from flying again.
