Al-Haq Director Affirms Continued Human Rights Monitoring Amid US Sanctions
Al-Haq's Ongoing Human Rights Monitoring Efforts
Al-Haq, a prominent human rights organization based in the West Bank city of Ramallah, continues its vital work of collecting firsthand testimonies and documenting potential human rights abuses in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Recent reports include harrowing accounts of Israeli soldiers using a 22-month-old child to torture a Palestinian husband and military tanks crushing civilians. Shawan Jabarin, Al-Haq's director, highlighted a significant shift in the nature and scale of Israeli human rights violations compared to when he started as a fieldworker 39 years ago. He noted a complete lack of investigation into tens of thousands of Palestinian deaths, injuries, and torture cases today, unlike in the past when complaints would receive responses from Israeli authorities.
US Sanctions and Al-Haq's Resilience
Al-Haq has faced severe challenges, including being criminalized by Israel and sanctioned by the US Trump Administration on September 4, 2025, for alleged involvement in the International Criminal Court's (ICC) illegitimate targeting of Israel. These sanctions led to the dissolution of Al-Haq's bank accounts with several banks, crippling its operations, and forcing US-citizen colleagues to resign. Despite these obstacles, Jabarin affirmed that Al-Haq's work persists. He stressed that working in the human rights field is not merely a job but a deep belief in justice and the rule of law. He asserted that while Israel and the US have attempted to discredit Al-Haq, they have never successfully challenged the credibility of the information the organization collects.
