Drone Crashes into Romania Apartment, Russia Denies Origin
Drone Crash in Romania Fuels Russian Involvement Suspicions
In the early hours of May 29, a drone crashed into an apartment building in the Galați region of Romania, injuring two people and sparking a fire. Romanian authorities claim the drone was Russian-made, noting this is the first time a drone has crashed into a residential building in Romania since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. The incident has drawn strong reactions from NATO, the European Union (EU), and other Western leaders.
Romania's Defense Ministry Explains 'Insufficient Time' for Interception
Romania's Ministry of Defense stated they lacked sufficient time to shoot down the Russian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) before it crashed into the apartment. While Russian attacks on Ukraine occurred overnight on May 28-29, air defense radar detected the drone entering Romanian airspace. Despite deploying two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter, they could not prevent the drone from crashing into the apartment rooftop. General Gheorghe Maxim of the Romanian Joint Forces Command explained they only had four minutes. Romanian President Nicholas Maduro added that the decision not to fire was due to the conditions not being met to destroy the UAV without posing significant danger to civilians.
