Swedish PM Calls for 'Right Direction' Support for Ukraine Drones

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated on May 21 that NATO countries should assist in 'guiding' Ukraine's drone attacks in the 'right direction'. This comes after Russia accused Latvia of allowing Ukraine to use its territory for drone attacks against Russia. The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) announced on May 19 that Latvia permitted Ukraine to launch drone attacks from its territory, a claim Latvia denied, asserting Ukraine's right to self-defense.

Ukraine's Drone Use and NATO's Response

During a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Kristersson criticized Russia's statements as an attempt to 'give the impression that other countries are doing something illegitimate,' adding that 'we should assist the Ukrainian people as much as possible to direct their attacks in the right direction.' He noted that Ukraine certainly does not want its drones to crash in friendly territory, describing such incidents as 'sometimes sabotage and sometimes confusing.' Secretary General Rutte also implicitly blamed Russia for interfering with or redirecting the drones, stating that Ukrainian drones violate NATO airspace because Russia is waging a full-scale war against Ukraine, forcing Ukraine to defend itself. Since mid-March 2026, Ukrainian long-range UAVs have repeatedly violated Baltic and Nordic airspace en route to Russian oil export ports, particularly in the Leningrad region. In late March 2026, a Ukrainian drone crashed into a power plant chimney near the Russian border in Estonia.
