Science Experiment Leads to Student Hospitalizations
Today morning, at Himeji City's Hakuro Integrated Elementary and Junior High School in Hyogo Prefecture, an unexpected amount of smoke was generated during a science experiment involving chemicals. As a result, 20 junior high school students, both male and female, complained of physical discomfort and were transported to a hospital.
Incident Details and Education Committee Response
According to the Himeji City Board of Education, students were temporarily evacuated after the incident, which occurred around 11 AM. The chemicals that caused the smoke were disposed of in a trash can. However, when classes resumed, a re-ignition occurred from the trash can. Although the teacher in charge attempted to extinguish it, students reported health issues. Of the hospitalized students, two were admitted but are reported to have only minor injuries.
Moving forward, the Board of Education plans to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident and implement countermeasures to prevent recurrence, strengthening guidance to schools.
