Monkey Attacks and Sightings Increase in Himeji City
In Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, two 12-year-old junior high school students were attacked by a monkey around 6 PM on May 26, sustaining minor injuries such as scratches to their shoulders. Upon police arrival, they reported being attacked by a monkey. Separately, footage from a nearby area showed a monkey moving on a building roof and power lines. It is unconfirmed whether this is the same monkey that attacked the students.
Public Concern Rises as Monkey Sightings Continue
Monkey sightings have been consistently reported in Himeji City since around May. To date, at least six individuals across four locations have been attacked and injured by monkeys. A person who filmed a monkey noted, 'The monkey seemed scared because police officers were around,' and expressed concern, stating, 'It's scary when a monkey approaches you.' Police are advising residents who encounter a monkey not to provoke it and to leave the area immediately.
