The international conference 'Humanoids Summit Tokyo 2026,' specializing in humanoid robots and Physical AI (Embodied AI / Physical AI), opened on May 28 in Tokyo. Originating in Silicon Valley, USA, this conference made its first foray into Asia in 2026 with the Tokyo event. The conference was organized by the US VC firm ALM Ventures, with the AI Robot Association (AIRoA) supporting its staging in Japan.
Professor Ishiguro Presents Vision for 'Cybernetic Avatar Society'
Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro of Osaka University delivered the keynote speech, accompanied by an android (Geminoid) resembling himself. Professor Ishiguro explained that the ultimate goal of robot research is to understand humans and presented the concept of a 'Cybernetic Avatar (CA) Society' to address Japan's declining population and aging issues. He envisioned a future society supported by Physical AI, encompassing remote work, medical care, nursing, disability support, and global labor networks. He also highlighted the significant progress in robot conversational abilities thanks to large language models (LLMs), emphasizing that 'embodiment' will be crucial going forward.
