Europe Issues Health Warnings Amid Unseasonal Heatwave, Dubbed 'Fastest-Warming Continent'
Europe Faces Record-Breaking Heatwave, Health Warnings Issued
European countries are grappling with an unseasonal heatwave that has led to record-breaking temperatures and the issuance of health warnings. Italy's health ministry declared a red alert as tourists struggled with 32°C temperatures. Paris, France, experienced its hottest May day ever recorded, while Spain saw unseasonably high temperatures, increasing the risk of wildfires. In the UK, temperatures near London soared to 33.5°C, surpassing the previous May record of 32.8°C set in 1922.
Europe Identified as 'Fastest-Warming Continent'
The extreme temperatures coincide with a UN-backed report naming Europe as the 'fastest-warming continent' due to climate change. The report indicates that Europe is warming more than two times faster than the global average. In Santarem, Portugal, highs of 37°C were recorded, leading residents to cool off in the river. In Paris, homeless people gathered to demand shelter amid an orange weather warning, with an association coordinator stating that as many people die on the streets in summer as in winter.
