India Warns of Increased Heatwave Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that several key regions, including the northern parts of the Indo-Gangetic Plains, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and parts of the eastern coast, are likely to face more heatwave days than normal this year. The IMD Director General stated that historically heat-prone zones are expected to see severe summer conditions, with temperatures already climbing toward dangerous levels. Areas such as Vidarbha in Maharashtra normally record 41 to 42 degrees Celsius at this time of year, while parts of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana can reach 40 to 44 degrees Celsius in May.

North India Faces Hotter Summer, Expanding Heatwave Zones

The warning suggests another punishing summer could be unfolding across large parts of India, where extreme heat has become more frequent, arrives earlier, and even lasts longer. Even places that may not officially meet heatwave criteria could still face temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, enough to strain health systems, power demand, and even daily life. The alert comes as authorities prepare for peak summer months when northern and western India often become the country's hottest zones.
