India Suffers from Extreme Heat, Temperatures Rise by 3 Degrees
Extreme Heat Across India, Delhi's Temperatures Rise by 3 Degrees
India is grappling with extreme heat, with temperatures in some regions exceeding 48 degrees Celsius. Notably, the capital city, New Delhi, has seen its temperatures rise by approximately 3 degrees over the past decade. This increase is attributed to rapid urbanization and a decrease in green spaces. The Indian Meteorological Department forecasts that these high temperatures are likely to persist.
Vulnerable Populations Suffer Amidst Heatwave and Lack of Facilities
Daily wage earners like porter Anil Ram and rickshaw taxi driver Mohammed Irshad are forced to continue working under scorching conditions to make a living. They earn as little as $6 a day, making rest an unaffordable luxury. For a city of 22.5 million people, New Delhi has only one government-run cooling center, making it challenging for vulnerable populations to find respite from the heat.
Socio-Economic Impacts and Health Concerns from Heat Stress
Medical experts warn that beyond heatstroke, the heatwave is worsening cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and causing mental stress. These extreme temperatures disproportionately affect the poor, who lack the means to stay cool, compared to the affluent. Research indicates that heat stress could lead to the loss of up to 35 million full-time jobs in India and a 4.5% drop in GDP.
