Russia Authorizes UAV Defense for Financial Institutions

Russia has recently passed a new law allowing the Central Bank of Russia and several key financial institutions to operate defense systems and equip themselves with weapons to counter drone attacks. This measure comes in response to the continuous increase in drone attacks by Ukraine on Russian territory since the full-scale conflict erupted in February 2022. Under the new legislation, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) defense systems can be deployed around the headquarters of the Central Bank of Russia, Sberbank (Russia's largest bank), and the Russian Association of Cash Collectors.

Protecting Energy Infrastructure and Boosting Corporate Investment

With this new law, employees of these organizations are permitted to carry weapons to protect infrastructure from UAV threats. According to RBC, Anatoly Aksakov, Chairman of the State Duma's Committee on Financial Markets, stated that financial institutions would bear all costs associated with deploying and operating anti-drone defense systems. Ukraine has frequently used UAVs to target energy infrastructure within Russia, claiming these attacks are part of a strategy to deplete Russia's financial resources and force an end to the war. This growing threat has compelled the Russian government and businesses to increase investment in defensive measures, with the head of Russia's largest business association reporting that companies are ready to fund the purchase of heavy weaponry and advanced electronic systems to protect their infrastructure.
