Hong Kong Approves Electoral System Reform, Emphasizing 'Patriots Governing'
Hong Kong Electoral System Reform Passed
The Hong Kong Legislative Council has finally passed an electoral system reform bill. This reform aims to restructure Hong Kong's political system in line with the principle of 'patriots governing Hong Kong'. The Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress had unanimously approved this reform last month. This reform has raised concerns about Hong Kong's autonomy.
Changes to Seats and Electoral Committee Composition
Under the new electoral system, the number of seats in the Legislative Council will increase from 70 to 90. However, the number of directly elected members will decrease from 35 to 20. Additionally, all Legislative Council members must undergo vetting by an electoral committee, and the number of seats appointed by specific committees will increase. This is expected to make it more difficult for pro-democracy figures to enter the Legislative Council.
