South Korea Launches 50.4 Billion Won 'National AI Humanoid' Development Project
'K-Moonshot' Project Accelerates AI Humanoid Development
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 18th that it held a kick-off meeting for the 'Public-Private Cooperation-Based AI Humanoid Core Technology Advancement Project.' Led by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and joined by companies like LG Electronics and LG Energy Solution, this project marks the first step in developing a Korean-style representative AI humanoid platform. As a key initiative within the 'K-Moonshot' project for AI-driven scientific and technological innovation, the government plans to invest a total of 50.4 billion won by 2030 to secure humanoids integrating intelligence and physical capabilities.
Integrated Development of Solid-State Batteries and Next-Generation AI Models
This project will involve the integrated development of hardware, software, and AI in a package form for humanoids, followed by on-site demonstrations. KIST will leverage its independently developed platform, KAPEX, while LG Electronics will develop next-generation mass-production robot models. LG Energy Solution plans to apply high-safety solid-state battery technology to the robot platform, aiming for humanoids with reduced fire risk and extended operational duration. Furthermore, next-generation AI models capable of integrally understanding and judging vision, touch, language, and actions will be developed. This will enable robots to perceive environments like humans and autonomously plan complex tasks. Over 20 developed humanoids will be deployed in medical and care environments, such as Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital, to verify their potential in assisting human daily life.
