AI Accelerates Cyber Attacks and Increases Threats
AI Accelerates Cyber Attacks
Verizon's latest annual Data Breach Investigations Report warns that hackers are now using artificial intelligence to speed up cyber attacks, making it harder for companies and governments to defend their systems before damage is done. The report reviewed over 31,000 cyber incidents and found that software vulnerability exploitation has now overtaken stolen passwords as the most common entry point for cyber attacks.
According to the report, 31% of all data breaches started through software flaws. Generative AI is now aiding cybercriminals throughout the attack process, including target selection, initial access, malware development, and other hacking tools. The company warned that AI has significantly reduced the time available to respond to threats, with known software weaknesses now exploited within hours instead of months.
Shadow AI and Hacking Risks
The report also found that shadow AI, which refers to employees using unauthorized AI tools, has become the third most common non-malicious cause of data loss incidents. Employees are submitting source code, images, and other structured data into AI systems without approval. CrowdStrike previously reported that AI-enabled cyber attacks rose by 89% year-on-year in 2025, allowing even less sophisticated hackers to carry out advanced attacks.
