'CareCloud' Suffers Data Breach and Network Disruption
CareCloud Data Breach and Network Outage
CareCloud, a healthcare IT firm, has reported a data breach incident that exposed sensitive patient information and caused a network disruption lasting approximately eight hours. The New Jersey-based company stated that the breach occurred on March 16, when hackers gained unauthorized access to its IT infrastructure. CareCloud, a publicly traded firm with nearly 4,000 employees, notified the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) about the incident.
Details of the Hack and Affected Data
According to the SEC filing, the data breach partially impacted one of the six electronic health record environments used by CareCloud's health division. Patient records in one health record environment were compromised. The company confirmed that network functionality and data access were fully restored later that evening. It remains unclear how many individuals were impacted, and the company is working to identify the types of data that have been accessed or potentially exfiltrated. CareCloud noted that other systems, divisions, and environments were unaffected.
Recovery Efforts and Future Prevention
CareCloud engaged a leading cyber response team, part of a Big Four accounting firm, to secure systems, strengthen security, and conduct a detailed forensic investigation. The attackers no longer have access to the database, and all systems have been fully restored. The company stated it continues to work closely with cybersecurity experts to prevent similar incidents in the future.
