Trump Administration's Reflecting Pool Renovation Sparks Controversy and Lawsuit
Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovation Under Fire
The Trump administration faces backlash for its proposed changes to the iconic Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Last month, President Donald Trump announced that a company responsible for his private pools would paint the Reflecting Pool blue, treating it like a 'swimming pool.' Initially, Trump stated the project would cost $1.8 million, but The New York Times reported that the actual cost has surged to $13.1 million, more than seven times the original estimate. This cost increase resulted from an unannounced contract revision on Friday.
Concerns Over Historical Integrity Lead to Lawsuit
In response to the changes, The Cultural Landscape Foundation has filed a lawsuit against the Department of the Interior and the Environmental Protection Agency. The lawsuit argues that the Reflecting Pool's signature dark color is a 'character-defining feature,' enabling it to 'reflect' the surrounding Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. The pool is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its historical significance. The suit contends that altering the pool's color and treating it as a swimming pool would compromise its historical integrity and seeks to halt the project.
