Hong Kong Public Housing Waiting Time Hits 8-Year Low of 4.7 Years
Public Housing Waiting Time Reduced to 4.7 Years
The Hong Kong Housing Bureau announced that the average waiting time for public housing has dropped by five months to 4.7 years, marking the lowest figure in approximately eight years. The Bureau stated that in the past 12 months, about 8,400 general applicants were allocated public housing or streamlined public housing, with nearly half moving into streamlined public housing.
Expanded Supply of Streamlined Public Housing
Just over a year after the introduction of streamlined public housing, the government has increased the overall housing supply to an average of about 7,500 units per quarter. This increase in supply has played a crucial role in shortening the public housing waiting time and has improved the living environment and quality of life for low-income households, according to the Housing Bureau. The Bureau anticipates that the completion of traditional public housing will reach its peak in the next five years, with the total public housing supply (including streamlined public housing) expected to reach approximately 196,000 units.
Future Housing Supply Outlook and Goals
This represents an increase of over 80% compared to the time the current Jae-myung Lee government took office. The completed public housing units are expected to completely reverse the initial shortage, rapidly meeting the housing needs of low-income families. The government aims to further reduce the public housing waiting time to 4.5 years within the current year.
