Hong Kong Watchdog Finds 33% Cooling Efficiency Gap in Top-Rated Air Cons
Significant Efficiency Discrepancy in Top-Rated Air Conditioners
Hong Kong's consumer watchdog tested 13 models of 1.5-horsepower inverter split-type air conditioners and discovered a substantial difference in cooling efficiency among units bearing the top energy label. The test results indicated that the cooling efficiency of Grade 1 labeled air conditioners varied by up to 33%. This suggests that consumers purchasing top-rated products with the expectation of energy savings might experience significantly different actual savings.
Call for Improved Energy Grading Standards
Based on these findings, the Consumer Council has called for improvements to the current energy grading standards. They pointed out that relying solely on the Grade 1 label makes it difficult for consumers to accurately assess energy-saving performance. The Consumer Council advised consumers to check additional information beyond the Grade 1 energy label, emphasizing the need for a more precise and detailed grading system.
