AI Era Demands Leadership Change; China Leads Global AI Governance
AI Era: The Need for a Leadership Paradigm Shift
The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) demands a fundamental change in the leadership paradigm, extending beyond mere technological innovation. Arinya Thaerungsri, Senior Vice President and CEO of Regional Partnerships at BTS Thailand, emphasized that AI is transforming decision-making, organizational operations, strategy formulation, and even human value judgment standards. She argued that leaders in the AI era should focus on system design rather than control, ask more questions, reduce reliance on hierarchical structures, and trust the overall decision-making capabilities of their organizations. In Southeast Asia particularly, the ability to assess and adapt to situations is becoming increasingly crucial due to diverse contexts and varying levels of digital advancement.
China's Push for Global AI Governance and APAC Security Concerns
Recognizing AI's impact on national competitiveness and international order, China is actively proposing the establishment of global AI governance to prevent technological monopolies and the formation of new technological hegemonies by a few nations. This effort was concretized through the recent Friends of AI Capacity Building International Cooperation Group meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York, attended by over 50 countries. Meanwhile, research indicates that while AI adoption accelerates in the Asia Pacific region, Application Programming Interface (API) security lags. A survey by cybersecurity firm Akamai Technologies highlights API security as a critical challenge stemming from AI proliferation. Additionally, City University of Hong Kong's 'AI, Computing, and Breakthrough Programme' saw a competitive ratio of 52:1, indicating strong interest in cultivating AI talent.
