AI Agents to Transform Computing Landscape

Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm, recently stated in an interview with Fortune that this year marks the 'year of the AI agent.' He believes that artificial intelligence (AI) agents will fundamentally change computing paradigms, with all future devices connecting to the cloud and AI processing, eliminating the reliance on specific operating systems or applications. Amon further predicted that many functions currently handled by smartphones would transition to other smart devices, such as smart glasses, within the next one to two years.

6G and AI Integration for New Sensing Systems

Amon emphasized that wireless communication experiences significant leaps every even generation, and 6G will be one of the most transformative shifts. He expects a substantial enhancement in wireless connectivity and the integration of AI into networks. Amon suggested that radio frequency (RF) signals could become a source of 'physical AI' data, enabling the analysis of physical environments and object states through AI processing of electromagnetic waves, thereby building large-scale sensing systems.

Decentralization of Smartphone Functions by 2027

Amon estimates that by 2027 or 2028, many tasks currently performed by smartphones will be transferred to other devices, including smart glasses, and even jewelry, pins, and pendants. He believes that the era of AI agents will foster a diverse ecosystem, allowing users to choose products from various companies based on their needs and trust. As an example, Amon cited ByteDance's pre-installation of the 'Doubao' AI assistant on ZTE's Nubia M153 phone, suggesting a proliferation of similar voice and text-command operated services.
