Qualcomm Predicts 2026 as 'Year of AI Agent'
The Advent of the AI Agent Era
Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon stated at Computex 2026 that artificial intelligence (AI) is evolving from a mere command-responsive tool into an AI Agent capable of understanding user intent, proactively planning, and executing tasks. He projected that 2026 would be the inaugural 'Year of the AI Agent'.
Amon explained that future AI Agents would go beyond passively answering questions to actively assist users with scheduling, managing itineraries, integrating information, and completing complex tasks. This could manifest in project management support in work environments, updating family schedules in home life, or even proactively offering suggestions and reminders based on personal habits.
Digital Ecosystem Transformation and Hardware Innovation
Cristiano Amon emphasized that the rise of AI Agents would transform the structure of the digital ecosystem. He analyzed that while smartphones were previously at the core of digital life, in the future, AI Agents would become the new center, with end devices such as smartphones, personal computers (PCs), wearables, and connected cars serving as entry points connecting users to AI Agents.
He noted that approximately 6 billion smartphones, 2 billion PCs, 2 billion personal AI devices, and 500 million connected cars globally could all become operational platforms for AI Agents, driving immense market demand. Amon added that existing end devices are not designed for AI Agents, necessitating significant changes in hardware architecture, including more efficient and power-saving CPUs, as well as NPUs and GPUs that support local AI model computation.
