Auto China 2026: China's Smart Mobility Future Unveiled
The Present and Future of Autonomous Driving Technology
At Auto China 2026 in Beijing, a wide array of innovative smart mobility technologies were unveiled. Notably, several NEV (New Energy Vehicle) models, having received road approval for highly automated "hands-off eyes-off" Level 3 autonomous driving, demonstrated their capabilities on real roads. This level allows drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel and, to a certain extent, be relieved of the obligation to keep their eyes on the road. Experts expressed anticipation for the commercialization of Level 4 autonomous driving beyond Level 3.
Smart Cabins and User Experience
The exhibition also highlighted cutting-edge smart cabin technologies. The VLA model enables vehicles to collect road conditions and monitor traffic lights, providing useful information to the driver. Additionally, functions like braking, changing lanes, and pulling over via voice control were demonstrated, emphasizing user convenience. These smart vehicles are evolving beyond mere transportation, becoming a "third space" to be enjoyed with family and friends.
Industry Experts' Outlook
Qiu Chao, Director of the Intelligent Driving Solution Sales Department at Huawei Intelligent Automotive Solutions BU, emphasized that with social progress and industrial accumulation, the autonomous driving industry will shift from L3 to L4, with L4 being an inevitable future stage. He added that while L3 and L4 require hardware redundancy, which may take some time, algorithm performance is already excellent. This indicates China's pursuit of balanced development in both hardware and software for autonomous driving technology.
