ANA and JAL Announce Significant Fuel Surcharge Hike from May
Changes in Fuel Surcharge Calculation and Price Hike Announcement
ANA (All Nippon Airways) and JAL (Japan Airlines) have announced a significant increase in international fuel surcharges for tickets issued from May, in response to the sharp rise in aviation fuel prices exacerbated by the tense situation in Iran. Previously, the surcharge reflected the average fuel price from 3-4 months prior. However, due to a approximately 2.5-fold surge in fuel prices, the calculation method has been revised to reflect the average from 2-3 months prior. This change has led to an accelerated revision of prices.
Surcharge Increases for Key Routes and Higher Ceilings
With this fuel surcharge increase, for flights from Japan to North America and Europe, ANA's surcharge will rise from the current 31,900 yen to 56,000 yen, and JAL's will increase from 29,000 yen to 56,000 yen. This represents a considerable price hike. Furthermore, both airlines have raised the maximum cap for fuel surcharges to 59,000 yen, preparing for potential future fluctuations in fuel costs.
