Tamil Nadu Faces Delimitation Debate: Stalin Calls for Black Flag Protest Over MP Seat Concerns
Tamil Nadu's Delimitation Dispute: Stalin Criticizes BJP's Policy
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has called for a black flag protest across the state, condemning the BJP's move for delimitation as an attempt to 'punish' southern states like Tamil Nadu for their effective population control efforts over several decades. Stalin expressed concern that based on the 2027 census, Tamil Nadu could lose many of its Member of Parliament (MP) seats, which currently stand at 39, representing 7.2% of the total parliamentary seats based on the 1971 census. He warned that this would be a massive injustice to the state, while northern states, which have failed to curb their population effectively, would see an exponential rise in their MP numbers.
Political Parties Intensify Campaigns to Woo Women Voters in Tamil Nadu
Major political parties in Tamil Nadu are actively campaigning to secure the support of women voters. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin led a massive roadshow in Salem City involving over 30,000 women, joined by allies Kamal Haasan and Premalatha. The ruling DMK has been appealing to women, who account for 51% of the state's voters, with various schemes such as free bus rides, a monthly assistance of 1,000 rupees, and promises to double this assistance and provide 8,000-rupee coupons for home appliances. The opposition AIADMK has countered with promises of free refrigerators and doubling the monthly assistance, reflecting competitive populism.
BJP and TVK Mobilize Support with High-Profile Campaigns
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a roadshow in Nagercoil, in the Kanyakumari district, to bolster the BJP's presence. The BJP is contesting four of the six seats in the district, with its ally AIADMK contesting the remaining two. Meanwhile, actor-turned-politician Vijay's Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) also conducted a massive roadshow in three assembly constituencies in the capital Chennai. The TVK is aiming to dent the DMK's stronghold in Chennai, deploying various campaign tactics including AI-based holograms, Vijay cutouts, and even MGR lookalikes to attract voters. It remains to be seen whether these efforts will significantly impact the political landscape in Tamil Nadu.
