Italy Pledges Drone Production Partnership and EU Accession Support to Ukraine
Italy-Ukraine Summit Highlights
On April 15, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a bilateral meeting in Rome. Prime Minister Meloni confirmed "full support" for Ukraine and expressed interest in a joint drone production initiative between Italy and Ukraine. The visit is part of President Zelenskyy's European tour to sign military agreements. Italy will also continue to promote economic pressure on the Russian Federation within the G7 and the European Union, criticizing Russia's continued attacks on civilians and essential infrastructure without showing concrete signs toward a negotiation process.
Support for Ukraine's EU Accession
During the Rome summit, Italy reiterated its backing for Ukraine's accession process into the European Union (EU). In addition to Prime Minister Meloni, President Zelenskyy also met with Italian Head of State Sergio Mattarella, where Italy's support for Ukraine's EU aspirations was reaffirmed. This endorsement is seen as a significant boost to Ukraine's European integration efforts. This visit to Italy marks another success for Kyiv's defense industry, following cooperation agreements signed in Berlin and Oslo.
