Campbell Town Cemetery Full, Locals Demand Public Cemetery
Campbell Town Cemetery Reaches Full Capacity
Sally Hills, a lifelong resident of Campbell Town, Northern Tasmania, always expected to be buried in her hometown. However, she recently discovered that the local Anglican church cemetery is full, meaning she cannot be interred with her parents and brother. Similarly, Kate Woodham was unable to bury her father in Campbell Town due to a lack of available plots, forcing them to bury him in the neighboring town of Ross. This situation has caused significant distress and disappointment among the local community.
Calls for a Public Cemetery and Search for Solutions
David Gatenby, a member of the Campbell Town District Committee, brought this issue to the Northern Midlands Council in March. Local residents are urging the council to build a public cemetery so they can continue to be buried close to home. In response, Northern Midlands Mayor Mary Knowles stated that the council does not possess any available land for such a purpose. She suggested that perhaps someone might be willing to donate land to the church. Currently, there is no clear solution to the growing problem of cemetery space.
