Kobe City Medical Center West Hospital has admitted to medical negligence following the death of a 70-year-old female patient from lung cancer in December 2025. The patient had undergone a chest CT scan in May 2024 after falling down stairs, primarily to check for rib fractures. However, a shadow of up to 37mm, indicative of lung cancer, was overlooked by the radiologist at the time.
Delayed Diagnosis and Hospital's Explanation
The patient returned to the hospital in October 2025, complaining of respiratory difficulties, and was then finally diagnosed with lung cancer. A review of her previous CT scan revealed the initial misdiagnosis from a year prior. The hospital explained that the primary focus of the initial CT was to diagnose a fracture, leading to insufficient observation of the lungs. They stated their commitment to preventing similar incidents by further utilizing AI support software in the future.
