Utah Launches AI Chatbot Program for Prescription Renewals
Utah Initiates AI Prescription Renewal Program
Utah has become the first state in the U.S. to launch a pilot program allowing an artificial intelligence (AI) system to renew drug prescriptions without direct doctor approval. The program, which utilizes an AI chatbot, will initially apply to 15 low-risk medications, including psychiatric drugs like Prozac, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, and Lexapro. However, controlled substances such as Adderall are not eligible for this trial.
Program Implementation and Potential Concerns
Managed by Legion Health, a Y Combinator-backed startup, the pilot program will run for 12 months. Patients can renew prescriptions via the AI chatbot for a monthly subscription of $19. Eligibility is limited to 'stable' patients who have not experienced recent medication changes or psychiatric hospitalization within the last year. The first 250 prescriptions will be monitored by a licensed physician, requiring a 98% approval rate before the system can issue prescriptions independently. While Utah aims to address mental health provider shortages, previous AI-powered programs have raised concerns about security vulnerabilities, as seen in a prior pilot where a system was easily manipulated.
