Coral Springs Vice Mayor Found Dead, Husband in Custody
Nancy Metayer Bowen, the Vice Mayor of Coral Springs, Florida, was found dead in her home on Wednesday morning. Police have arrested her husband, Stephen Bowen, in connection with the case, charging him with premeditated murder and tampering with evidence. Authorities are investigating the incident as a domestic violence case, and no additional suspects are being sought at this time.
A Legacy of Service Amidst Personal Tragedy
Nancy Metayer Bowen made history in 2020 as the first Black and Haitian American woman elected to the Coral Springs Commission, and she was appointed to her second term as Vice Mayor for 2025. Colleagues remembered her as compassionate and committed, always striving to improve the lives of others in the community. Florida Congressman Jared Moskowitz expressed shock at her passing, noting that she was preparing to announce a run for Congress.
Metayer Bowen also faced personal tragedy. Her brother, Donovan Metayer, died by suicide in December after a years-long battle with schizophrenia. He was a survivor of the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Her family described her as a 'cherished member of the family and a dedicated public servant' who was a 'source of strength, wisdom, and love—someone who always put others before herself.'
