Grammy-winning composer Lebo M is suing comedian Learnmore Jonasi for over $20 million, alleging that Jonasi intentionally misrepresented the meaning of the 'Circle of Life' chant from 'The Lion King'.
Misrepresentation of 'Circle of Life'
Grammy-winning South African composer Lebohang Morake (Lebo M), who wrote and performed the opening chant in Disney's 'The Lion King', is suing Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Mwanyenyeka (Learnmore Jonasi). Lebo M alleges that Jonasi intentionally misrepresented the meaning of the song's opening chant on a podcast and in his standup routine, thereby damaging his reputation. He is seeking more than $20 million in damages.
Lawsuit for Defamation and Damages
Lebo M's lawsuit accuses Learnmore Jonasi of deliberately mistranslating the chant, which is a central part of the 1994 movie, its staged versions, and the 2019 remake. Lebo M claims this misrepresentation has harmed his reputation, leading him to seek legal redress and compensation.
