Philippines DOTr Presents Long-Term Public Transport Modernization Plan Amid Fuel Crisis
DOTr's Long-Term Plan: Electric Vehicles and Expanded Services
Philippines' Department of Transportation (DOTr) Undersecretary Giovanni Lopez presented a long-term plan to modernize public transport in response to the fuel crisis. Lopez highlighted the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) as a core component of public transport modernization, emphasizing that incentives are being developed to assist existing operators in this transition. Additionally, the DOTr plans to implement service contracting and free ride programs to minimize commuter inconvenience and ensure the income of operators and drivers. Local government units are also encouraged to participate in these service contracting initiatives to address regional transportation challenges.
DOE and DMW Report on Crisis Response
Department of Energy (DOE) Undersecretary Sharon O. Sarte stated that the DOE is working with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to streamline permitting processes for renewable energy projects. Over 900 megawatts of renewable energy projects are currently underway, with completion expected from April to December with NGCP's assistance. Meanwhile, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac reported that out of approximately 7,000 Filipino seafarers in the Middle East, 4,900 on 466 ships in the Persian Gulf are marked safe. While some reports indicate concerns about dwindling supplies, DMW is in close contact with manning agencies and shipowners to ensure continuous provisions. Measures like port-side anchoring in Eastern Saudi Arabia and charter flights for repatriation are also being implemented.
