Germany's Last Glacier Ski Lift Demolished Due to Climate Change
Climate Change Leads to Ski Lift Demolition
On March 20, the Schneefernerkopf T-bar lift located on Germany's highest peak, the Zugspitze, was demolished. Built in 1967, it was the last ski lift in Germany constructed on a glacier. Operators stated that due to changing conditions brought on by climate change, it was no longer feasible to operate. The lift had not been used for the past two winter seasons, indicating the severe impact of glacier retreat.
Glacier Retreat and Changes in Ski Slopes
According to Laura Schaper, spokesperson for Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergban, the ice is receding, and the terrain around the lift has changed dramatically. What used to be an easy 'blue run' has now become a 'black run' due to the significantly steeper slope. This made it impossible to ensure the safety of skiers and the sustainable operation of the ski resort. Currently, only four glaciers remain in Germany, and scientists warn they will most likely soon disappear entirely.
