Inquest Reveals Findings on Hatton's Death

The senior coroner for South Manchester, Alison Mutch, recorded Ricky Hatton's cause of death as hanging, concluding that he was the person who caused his own death. However, she did not reach a conclusion of suicide, stating it was unclear whether the former world boxing champion intended to take his own life. The coroner cited the presence of alcohol in Hatton's system at the time of his death and the absence of any notes or indications of suicidal intent as reasons for this narrative conclusion.

Brain Changes and Family Observations

During his post-mortem, a pathologist identified brain changes consistent with CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), a disease often caused in contact sports like boxing. This condition can lead to memory loss, confusion, and forgetfulness. Hatton's family members testified that they had noticed such changes in him. The coroner expressed uncertainty about how much this condition contributed to his death, leading to a narrative conclusion instead of a definitive suicide verdict.

Family's Grief and Boxing World's Loss

Tears were shed by Hatton's family members in court when the conclusion was read. His son, Campbell Hatton, stated that his father was in the best place he had been in years before his death. His former partner, Jennifer, mother of his two daughters, mentioned that he seemed completely normal during a family meal on September 12th last year. Hatton was found dead at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, two days later by his manager, who was picking him up for a flight to Dubai for his first comeback fight in years. Known as 'The People's Champion', Ricky Hatton was a much-loved figure in the boxing world, and his passing is deeply mourned by his family and many fans.
