Nepal Appoints Bhumika Shrestha as First Transgender Parliamentarian
Bhumika Shrestha has made history by being appointed as Nepal’s first transgender parliamentarian by the Rastriya Swatantra Party. The former activist and actress was appointed to Nepal's House of Representatives, following the party's victory in the March election. She now plans to advocate in parliament for minorities and LGBTQ+ rights. Shrestha expressed her commitment to bringing the voices of gender and sexual minorities, as well as marginalized communities, to the parliament.
Progress and Challenges in LGBTQ+ Rights Advocacy
Nepal is recognized for having some of the most progressive laws in South Asia concerning LGBTQ+ rights. It was also the first country in the region to legally recognize same-sex marriages. However, activists emphasize that the fight for full equality is far from over. Umisha Pandey, President of the Blue Diamond Society, stated, "Our pain, our suffering, our feelings, our stories, and all our problems are only understood by us, not by others." She stressed the necessity of having a representative in parliament to address these issues. Shrestha's appointment is seen as a crucial opportunity to champion these voices.
