Multiple Suicide Blasts Rock Maiduguri, Nigeria
Series of Suicide Blasts Hit Maiduguri
A series of suicide bombings have rocked Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, causing multiple deaths and injuries. According to security sources, the first blast occurred at a post office in the city center, immediately followed by another at the popular Monday market nearby. Later, during the early evening hours, two more blasts struck the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and another hit the eastern neighborhood of Geleri.
Governor Condemns 'Barbaric' Attacks, Links to Military Operations
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the attacks as 'barbaric.' He suggested that the recent surge in attacks might be linked to intensified military operations in the Sambisa Forest, a known jihadist stronghold. Borno State Police reported that security operatives and emergency responders were deployed following reports of the blasts. They also advised residents to remain calm and avoid the affected areas while assessments continue. These attacks follow a recent incident where the Nigerian military said security forces had repelled assaults by suspected Islamist insurgents on the outskirts of the city in the early hours of Monday, with no casualties recorded among military or civilians during those earlier attacks, though insurgents were believed to have suffered losses.
