Michigan Synagogue Truck Attack Thwarted by Security Training
Michigan Synagogue Attack Prevented from Escalating by Security Training
A truck ramming attack occurred at Temple Israel synagogue in Michigan, but comprehensive security training at the institution played a critical role in preventing a greater tragedy. The synagogue had regularly conducted active shooter drills for its staff, with the most recent one taking place just six weeks before the incident. Jason Plotkin, Executive Director of Temple Israel, stated, "This was something we were prepared for, and unfortunately it's a reality. If it weren't for the training, I wouldn't necessarily know what to do."
Suspect Identified, Motive Under Investigation
Authorities identified the assailant as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali. Ghazali was reportedly seen purchasing thousands of dollars worth of fireworks two days before the attack. He waited in the synagogue parking lot for two hours before plowing his truck through the synagogue's doors and down the hall, hitting a security guard. After his truck became stuck in the hallway, Ghazali died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators are still searching for a precise motive, but officials noted that four of Ghazali's family members were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon last week. He entered the U.S. in 2011 on an immigrant visa as the spouse of a citizen and became a U.S. citizen in 2016. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized that "authorities are investigating" amid a rise in antisemitism and attacks on the Jewish community.
